A MODEST MAN
DEPARTED THIS LIFE
On the 09th day of August the painter Česlovas Znamierovskis died. Having chosen the burden of an artist in his youth, he carried it patiently and hardily for over fifty years until the end of his life.
Č. Znamierovskis was born on 23 May 1890 in Zatiše (Latvia). Having finished Daugavpils Secondary School, he studied at the School of Art Supporting Society and Higher School of Art under Petrograd Academy of Art. From 1920 he started participating in exhibitions and was a member of the Latvian Independent Artists’ Society. In 1926-1929 Č. Znamierovskis studied art at the Faculty of Art of Vilnius University. In 1933 for his painting “Storm-Clouds” he won a bronze medal in the art contest in Krakow. In 1936 together with other artists he established Vilnius Independent Artists’ Society. In Soviet years he took an active part in exhibitions organized in our republic and the Soviet Union. He also arranged several personal exhibitions. In 1965 he was conferred an honorary title of Honourable Art Worker of LSSR.
The creation of the deceased consists mainly of landscapes. The landscapes painted by him are always idealized and the majority of them reflect a romantic evening, morning or early spring mood. Č. Znamierovskis’ creation was greatly influenced by artistic conceptions based on academic attitude of his teachers (V. Dmokhovsky, A. Rylov, A. Dubovskoy).
There are two distinct groups of works standing out in the creative heritage of the artist: the finished landscapes-compositions created most often in the studio by choosing every detail in a careful way, thus trying to bring the view to reality as near as possible and the landscape sketches painted from nature that have retained subtle nuances of the mood, richness of colours, that reveal the author’s sincerity and love for nature. A lot of landscapes depicting Vilnius and its environs have survived though Č. Znamierovskis used to paint both industrial views and portraits.
This life was departed by a modest ordinary man, a gifted artist liked by people for frankly expressing love for the beauty of nature…
